BIO

The sound of the piano is the very first thing

I remember. My dad used to play some songs for me when I was a child and I grew up surrounded by his music. I started writing my own songs when I was about 12 years old. I always wanted to play and sing at the same time but there was a small problem… I couldn’t practice on a regular basis because I kept breaking bones!! That’s right, I was a very “active” child and most of my friends from school remember me for my strawberry blond hair and a cast on my arm ;-) I broke my left arm eight times in my life and ended needing titanium plates installed permanently on both of my bones. Not a perfect condition for practicing the piano!!

Although I’ve done most of my practicing as an adult I’m trying to do my best despite my movement limitations. I write all of my songs with the piano, some of them stay that way and others get rearranged for guitar or sometimes the whole band. I also enjoy playing cover songs by my favourite artists - bands like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Tori Amos, Eva Cassidy, Fiona Apple or Sting, to name just a few :-)

FAR AWAY LAND//
words & music by ZUZA

As I said, I started writing songs as a young teenager, but it was not until quite recently that I have decided to bring them all into the light and play them :-) I write about things that touch me the most - missing my home, missing my younger years, looking back to some old friendships, family, and of course love. My songs are mainly pop and folk tunes. I write melodies and chord structures using my piano and a Mac computer. Sometimes I arrange all the parts for the other instruments as well.

Apart from the piano, I also play the flute. I have quite vast knowledge of music theory & harmony as I have a diploma from jazz & stage music (The Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, Poland). My main subject there was singing, so my songs are very melodic, lyrics-orientated, often with many background vocals. I love arranging vocal harmonies! I hope to have a band where everyone sings one day :-)

I listen to lots of different kinds of music. I was raised on the blues & rock from the 60s – 70s, my favourite band in high school was Led Zeppelin ;-) But also Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Simon and Garfunkel, The Grateful Dead, Jethro Tull… and many others! I have definitely had my progressive period, I even played in a progressive rock band in my early university years. But then I started studying at the jazz department and I discovered the fantastic voices of Eva Cassidy, Norah Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone... Oh, that list is endless! And it keeps expanding :-)

The Beatles, Queen, Sting, David Gilmour, Fleetwood Mac, Simon and Garfunkel...
